Student Health Insurance

Below are a series of commonly asked questions about health insurance at MassArt. If you do not see your question listed below contact or call 617-879-7903.

Q: I already have private health insurance and want to waive the MassArt student health plan. How do I do that?
1. Go to University Health Plans:
2. Scroll down the list of colleges and universities and click on the link for "Massachusetts College of Art and Design."
3. Now select "Click here for the Massachusetts College of Art and Design Student Insurance Plan."
4. Select "Click here to Waive."
5. You will be asked to enter your name, DOB and student ID. On the next page, you must enter your local contact information and private health insurance information. Once you complete the form, you should receive a waiver number confirming that the process is complete. If you receive an error while completing the form, contact or call 617-879-7903.

Q: What is the cost of the MassArt health insurance plan?
A: The annual cost for the MassArt Student Health Insurance Plan for 2014-15 is $1,854. Coverage lasts from August 1, 2014 to July 31, 2015.

Q: What exactly does the plan cover?
A: The Blue Cross Blue Shield Preferred Provider Plan (PPO) allows students to be seen at various sites for primary care. This includes the Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates that administers MassArt's Student Health Services as well as most primary care providers in Massachusetts. Q: Is dental or vision coverage included in the MassArt health insurance plan?
A: The MassArt health insurance plan does NOT include dental or vision coverage. There are voluntary dental plans offered through Delta Dental and a voluntary VSP vision plan. For more details about the Delta Dental plans, click here. For more details about the VSP Vision Care plan, click here.

Q: Once I enroll in the student health plan, when does my coverage start and when I do pay for the insurance?
A: Once you have enrolled and paid for the MassArt health insurance plan, coverage is retroactive as of August 1. Please be sure to enroll online at University Health Plans to ensure that there is no lapse in coverage.

Q: I enrolled in the MassArt student health plan. When will I receive an insurance card?
A: You should receive your insurance card within 2 weeks after enrollment. Be sure that you enroll using a local address, not your home address, in order to receive your card promptly.

Q: I have private health insurance and want to use MassArt's  Student Health Services at Harvard Vanguard. Will I be billed for these services?
A: All MassArt students may use the MassArt Student Health Services, located on the 2nd floor of the MassArt New Residence Hall. Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates administers this service and bills each student's health insurance for services rendered. All co-payments are waived and basic services are provided without cost to the student unless there are laboratory tests or additional specialized services.
*It is extremely important that you have insurance coverage that will pay for medical care in the Boston area. Many out-of-area insurance companies are restrictive about what services they will pay for when you are away from home. Please ask specifically what services are covered by your insurance company prior to coming to campus. Your insurance should have equal or better coverage for medical services if you plan to waive the MassArt student health insurance plan.

Q: I have waived the MassArt student health plan and am currently covered by my parents' insurance, but I'm afraid I might lose coverage in the middle of the year. Can I enroll in the MassArt student health plan mid-year?
A: Yes. If there is a qualifying event (a loss of job, divorce, death) that results in a change in availability of alternative health insurance, then you may be able to enroll mid-year onto the student health insurance plan. Documentation proving loss of coverage will need to be provided to MassArt to arrange a smooth transition and ensure ongoing medical coverage.

Q: I'm only enrolled in 9 or more credits for the Fall/Spring semester, not the full year. Do I still qualify for the student health insurance?
A: Yes. As long as you are a full-time student enrolled in 9 or more credits, you can enroll in the MassArt student health plan for one semester only. The cost will be prorated

Q: I am an international student and already have health insurance that is not based in the United States. Can I waive MassArt's insurance?
A: No. You must have health insurance that is headquartered in the United States. For more details, see the Commonwealth of MA's website on student health insurance.

Q: Are my spouse and/or children covered by the MassArt student health plan?
A: No. The student health plan is only for full time MassArt students.

Q: I waived the MassArt student health insurance plan, but I am concerned about the impact of the health insurance charge on my financial aid package. How do I find out more information about this?
A: The health insurance charge has no impact on your financial aid. If you have questions about financial aid, contact Student Financial Assistance at 617-879-7849.

Q: I'm a part-time student. Am I still eligible for the MassArt student health insurance plan?
MassArt students must be enrolled in at least 9 credits to be eligible for SHIP (Student Health Insurance Plan).

Q: If I don't want MassArt's student health insurance, what alternative insurance is acceptable?
A: Alternative insurance must provide comparable coverage to the MassArt student health insurance plan. This includes most but not all health insurance plans.
MassArt can grant a waiver request if you have coverage through the HealthConnector or MassHealth (exluding MassHealth Limited, the Health Safety Net or the Children's Medical Security Plan). To clarify, membership in all following subsidized programs currently offered through the Health Connector or MassHealth are among those that are now considered comparable under the new state regulations:

Q: I already waived the MassArt student health plan last year. Do I have to waive it every year?
A: Yes. You must submit a waiver with proof of comparable health insurance every year, online at University Health Plans.

Q: How long am I covered by the student health insurance? Can I still use it after I graduate from MassArt?
A: The annual coverage lasts until July 31 each year unless you have elected to enroll for only one semester. If you do not waive insurance and you are continuing to be enrolled as a full time student (i.e. 9 or more credits), your insurance will continue without being interrupted once you have paid your annual bill but you must enroll on line every year. After graduation, the insurance coverage ends on July 31.
