Dear MassArt Community,
We are pleased to inform you that we have partnered with Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates and Wentworth Institute of Technology to offer Harvard Vanguard Student Health Services for MassArt students. In order to ensure quality medical care is provided to all of our students, this letter is to inform you about our relationship with Harvard Vanguard. Harvard Vanguard Student Health Services is located on the Wentworth Campus in Watson Hall. You may start using this location immediately.
Who is Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates?
Harvard Vanguard provides access for our students to comprehensive medical services, offered by a multi-specialty physician group renowned for the quality of their care and affiliated with leading Boston hospitals. Harvard Vanguard's Kenmore practice is located less than a mile from the MassArt campus at 133 Brookline Avenue (next to the Landmark Center), and offers primary and specialty care, as well as imaging, lab, and pharmacy in one convenient location.
What kind of medical care is included?
Harvard Vanguard offers a broad range of primary care medical services to MassArt students, and most of these services are covered by MassArt including the co-pay, deductible, and any fees not covered by your own insurance. These include the following:
- basic physical exams
- management of acute and chronic illness (e.g. asthma)
- care of sports-related injuries
- academic and sports clearance
- diagnosis and treatment of STDs
- gynecologic services
Harvard Vanguard also offers a broad range of specialty and diagnostic services at the Kenmore site. Services for which you or your insurance company will be billed include the following:
- specialty medical services
- surgical services
- dental services
- visual services and eyeglasses
- medical and surgical equipment and diagnostic services, e.g. MRI and CT
What do I need to know about becoming a Harvard Vanguard patient?
MassArt students will need to register as a Harvard Vanguard patient by calling 617 989 4070. Once that is completed, students can call that same number to schedule an appointment or to receive medical advice and information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Students must present their student identification card and their health insurance card at every appointment, just as you do when accessing their primary care physician at home. Harvard Vanguard will bill students' insurance plans for all services rendered.
Students will have no fees or co-payment due for the primary care services listed above. However, payments may be due for specialty and diagnostic services.
Certain health insurance providers will send the insurance subscriber or policy holder, via mail, an "Explanation of Benefits (EOBs)" document after each student's visit. While EOBs do not include medical diagnoses, they may include codes for procedures and services rendered.
We encourage you to review the list of health insurance plans accepted by Harvard Vanguard at http://www.harvardvanguard.org/about/insure/index.asp in the event that you need to schedule an appointment for a medical specialty or diagnostic service at Harvard Vanguard that is not included in the list of primary care services above.
Where do I go for Counseling Services?
Counseling Services is still located on the 2nd floor of Kennedy via a new entrance in the student center. Counseling is available at no charge to all MassArt students. If you need a psychiatric prescription, we can refer you to a psychiatrist at Harvard Vanguard's Behavior Health Department located in their Kenmore practice, or MassArt can refer to you an outside psychiatrist.
What if Harvard Vanguard does not accept my health insurance?
MassArt will cover all fees for students for standard primary care services at Harvard Vanguard Student Health Services. In the event that medical specialty or diagnostic services are required, students will either need to pay for these services out of pocket or seek a medical provider who accepts their particular insurance plan.
What if I do not have health insurance?
All students must have health insurance to comply with Massachusetts State law. A Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) is available through MassArt and is accepted by Harvard Vanguard, and can be used to cover part of or all of certain specialties and diagnostic services. The SHIP offers exceptional coverage at an outstanding value compared to most options available to students. For coverage details including costs, benefits, exclusions, any reductions or limitations, please refer to the plan information located at https://www.universityhealthplans.com/intro/MassArt.html or call 800 437 6448. The SHIP is underwritten by Blue Cross Blue Shield and administered by University Health Plans.
How do I make an appointment? What are the hours of operation?
Both scheduled and walk-in appointments are available. To pre-register as a Harvard Vanguard patient and to make an appointment call 617 989 4070. Students can call the same number for medical advice and information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Please have your insurance card and MassArt student ID when checking in.

Saturdays: 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Sundays: noon - 5:00 p.m.
What if I have a life-threatening emergency?
In the case of a life-threatening emergency, immediately contact MassArt Office of Public Safety at 617 879 7800 or 911.
How do I get to Harvard Vanguard in Kenmore (directions)?
From the MassArt campus, proceed down Evans Way, Continue on Fenway, Turn right to stay on Fenway, Slight left at Park Drive, Turn right at Brookline Ave (Landmark Center/Best Buy across street). Harvard Vanguard is at the next traffic light at the corner of Fullerton Avenue.
